Eh, kemonomimi is a type 1 furry, still acceptable though. Gotta be type 0 straight-up human to avoid the furry label entirely.

Furry's not a spectrum though, its a very specific term, from a very specific origin, of a specific community with specific aims. The definitions keep changing and broadening, but mostly its from people who don't know what they're talking about... And animal ears is also a very specific term, with very different aims, coming from a whole other community, actually, more than that, it was also just a PART of said community.

Furry was always about mascot characters, usually not even animals, but more goofily drawn stuff, coming mainly from companies like disney, in the west, way back. Later it spread to also mean talking animals, and more properly anthropomorphic or even humanoid animals that acted in human ways... And to people who enjoy such stuff, and/or porn with it, also fursuits.

Animal ears meanwhile is quite the opposite, its all about HUMAN characters adopting a few animalistic quirks (behavior and/or ears and tail). But even that description is very limited without mentioning that its a fragment from the main thing and reasoning behind it, being a subculture under the bigger thing called moe culture, which mainly was about looking for ways to make characters more memorable, iconinc, and most importantly, - cute and appealing. It did far more than the animal ears, stuff you see everywhere nowadays - from the 'glasses appeal' to twintails and braids and some other haircut centric stuff, to all the ahoges, to the 'cute fang', to 'the clutz appeal', to the chibi style, to the :3 :< :> :x faces, to kuudere, tsundere, etc.
